First, demonstrants had a long march from Customary Council office in Waena to Abepura town. In Abepura town Indonesian police and mobile brigade fully equipped with guns and weapons tried to block the demonstrants. The Indonesian police efforts to prohibit the long march nearly created a conflict between demonstrants and police personnel. However, after a negotiation between coordinator of tyhe long march and the head of Abepura police, the demonstrants were then allowed to continue their route to UNDP and DPRD offices in Jayapura.
Second, representatives of demonstrants were able to meet UNDP coordinators in Jayapura. The result of the meeting was that the UNDP coordinator welcome aspirations from the demonstrants and promised that he would forward them to UN Ambassador for Indonesia in Jakarta. The UN Ambassador is the right person to send the aspirations to the UN General Secretary. The two UNDP coordinators, Bishnu R. Ghimire –OIC and Vincente C. Queipo expressed their happines that they could meet with the demonstrants. It was the first time they meet native West Papuans.
Third, demonstrants went to Papua Province House of Parliament to demand the speaker of the house of parliamenta and his related department to write a letter to the head of Indonesian police in West Papua to stop interrogation of the customary council leader and the committee of Indigenous day celebration. The main reason is that the Indonesian police only investigated the issue of morning star flag raisers while ignoring the investigation of the actors of the shooting incidence on the 9th of August 2008.
Fourth, Chairman of Commission F of the Papua Province house of parliament who is responsible for law and human rights listened and responded well and seriously. According to Mr Weynand Watori (the chairman of Commission F), he had made some comments and raised the issue through local and national media. Mr Watori further stated that the members of the house of parliament have not received any aspirations from the people regarding the issue. And therefore he felt so grateful for activists and the Papuan people who came in today's coalition to raise this human rights. He also stated that human rights is an international issue. Therefore, he expected that all parties should support the legal process to reveal the actor (from military/police personnel) who shot death Opinus Tabuni on the 9th of August 2008 during the celebration of the International indigenous day celebration.
End of report.
Thank you for all your support and good cooperation to help West Papuan people in their struggle for gaining their political rights.
