For West Papua, Withdraw agreement with Jakarta: Natapei

Written By Voice Of Baptist Papua on March 15, 2013 | 10:52 PM

Opposition Leader Edward N. Natapei.
Vanuatu,-- The Leader of the Opposition did not mince his words when commenting on the issue of the struggle of the West Papuan people for a political freedom from Indonesia.

“The Opposition has two calls to the Kilman-led government. First is to withdraw an agreement that was signed between Port Vila and Jakarta by the Kilman-led government, and secondly is to withdraw review Indonesia’s observer status in the Melanesian Spearhead Group ( MSG) during the upcoming MSG Meeting in, Noumea, New Caledonia in July of this year,” Opposition Leader Edward Nipake Natapei told Daily Post yesterday at Parliament House.

He said it is totally wrong for Indonesia to meddle in the affairs of the Melanesian countries such as the MSG.

“Remember what the first and late Prime Minister Father Walter Lini said –that Vanuatu will never be fully free until other colonized countries including West Papua are politically freed,” Natapei commented after listening to the talk by the West Papuan Freedom campaigner Benny Wenda.

“The Opposition strongly supports the application for West Papua to become a full member of the MSG at the upcoming MSG Meeting in Noumea New Caledonia in July this year,” said Natapei.

“Melanesian countries are members of the MSG and MSG does not have MSG plus, the plus is West Papua and not Indonesia which is not a Melanesian country,” said the Opposition Leader Natapei.

He confirmed that the Opposition supports the inclusion of West Papua receiving a full status of the MSG Membership to be on the MSG agenda for the upcoming meeting in New Caledonia in July this year.

Ties with Indonesia may be cut if no-confidence move succeeds

By Ricky Binihi

PORT VILA, Vanuatu (Vanuatu Daily Post, Dec. 5, 2012) – Vanuatu’s next government, if a motion of no-confidence against PM Sato Kilman succeeds in Parliament, will work more with the people of West Papua and Vanuatu could cut diplomatic relations with Indonesia.

That was the message the dignitaries and sympathizers of the West Papua cause heard when the Morning Star flag was hoisted at Vete’s Headquarters in Port Vila to commemorate West Papua’s Independence since 1961.

Former Head of State Mr. Kalkot Matas Kelekele, Melanesian Progressive Party (MPP) President and former Vanuatu Prime Minister, Barak Sope, the President of the Graon and Jastis Party (GJP) MP Ralph Regenvanu, former Foreign Affairs Ministers MP Joe Natuman, MPP Malekula MP Sai Esmon, Dr. John Ondawame, West Papua outspoken leader Andy Ayamiseba, and members of the Vete hierarchy were all present on December 1.
Former President Matas Kelekele who reportedly told the President of Indonesia he still prayed for the Melanesians in West Papua said "colonization by the Indonesians of West Papua is a sin."

Former Vanuatu PM Sope said the MPP does not recognize West Papua as part of Indonesia and it will never do so and that "the struggle for West Papua must continue because victory is certain."

Former Foreign Affairs Minister Natuman said the relations between Jakarta and Port Vila must be "terminated" because he alleged that in the past two years Indonesia has provided funds to individual Vanuatu politicians and not the Nation.

Four government backbenchers moved to join the Opposition that Friday so when GJP President MP Regenvanu took the stage on Sunday he said the government that will be elected on December 10 will ensure that West Papua becomes a priority.

Members at the ceremony that was organized by former MP David Abel and Chairman of the Organising Committee, Mr. Alul Ravue heard that after the 51 years of struggle 600,000 West Papuans have died and 7 million Indonesians have migrated to West Papua and have diluted the cause for Independence of West Papua is coming.

Mr. Shem Rarua who has been mandated by the West Papuan Council to speak at the occasion announced that they have now decided to register West Papua cause to the International Court of Justice in Hague and they are confident Vanuatu’s brothers and sisters of West Papua will be free.

Chairman says VCC will take up West Papua case

Written By Voice Of Baptist Papua on November 16, 2012 | 7:47 PM

Voice Baptist,-- Vanuatu Christian Council (VCC) Chairman, Anglican Bishop James Ligo, says the VCC will take up the West Papua case in its Annual General Meeting next week, emphasising its firm stand to work with the new Government to make West Papua its priority.

He says the VCC is taking up the case because it has become clear that the caretaker Government of Prime Minister Sato Kilman has gone astray from the original focus of the Founding Fathers of the Struggle that called for the people of West Papua to be free of Indonesian slavery to decide their own destiny.

As the Chairman of VCC, the Bishop says he does not see any reason at all why the Government has not taken up the plight of the “brothers and sisters” of West Papua.

“The caretaker Prime Minister used a metaphor to say that if you want to tame a lion, you must not isolate it but keep it close to you. But I want to add that a lion is unpredictable and very dangerous, and will attack you and kill you if you allow it to wander in the neighbourhood,” Bishop Ligo says.

He says VCC wants to know what kind of assurance Indonesia has given to the MSG to acquire observer status at its meetings.

“We can’t entertain somebody that kills our brothers and sisters everyday then take him onboard to as an observer on the Melanesian Spearhead Group of countries,” he says.

“We that make up the VCC will work with the new Government to consult and pursue ways to free the people of West Papua who are getting killed every day by the Indonesian military,” he says.

Bishop Ligo says VCC will take West Papua issue to the Pacific Council of Churches Meeting in Honiara, Solomon Islands next year and even as far as the World Council of Churches and the Decolonisation Committee of the United Nations.

Indonesia mengklaim bahwa kemenangan diplomasi atas Vanuatu

Written By Voice Of Baptist Papua on June 7, 2012 | 10:22 PM

Lord Mayor of Luganville, Trevor Moliva, has described attempts by the Union of Moderate Parties (UMP) to organise a full Council meeting last Friday as not valid.

Moliva said amid the confusion in the calling of the council meeting, members of the coalition running the council reportedly supported the calling.

“Some of the concerns raised by them were; improper financial management; the Mayor is helping his councilors under the NUP umbrella and lastly the discipline of the Deputy Mayor Elisabeth Sihos,” Moliva said.
