Sponsor Sarah Walpole who has done a 2 mile swim for action against violence in West Papua.

Indonesian has intervened in West Papua and has caused an estimated 100,000 West Papuan civilians to be killed. They have also repressed West Papuan rights to freedom of expression.

To the Permanent Mission of Republic of Indonesia to the United Nations,
I was shocked to learn about the violent Indonesian intervention in West Papua which has caused an estimated 100,000 West Papuan civilians to be killed. I am also deeply concerned to hear of the repression of West Papuan rights to freedom of expression, for example, that raising the West Papuan “morning star” flag is enough to commit a West Papuan person to imprisonment by Indonesian military.

Although the Indonesian government is denying that such violence is taking place, this is contrary to news reports from the country and the history provided by those who have emigrated from West Papua. West Papua has been occupied by Indonesian authorities for more than fifty years. Only 1025 of the 800,000 or so West Papuans were allowed to vote during the “Act of Free Choice” in 1963 and those who did vote were coerced to vote in favour of integration with Indonesia.

I am writing to express my profound distress about the current situation, and in particular the recent attacks on civilians in Wamena. Support for West Papuans who are asserting their right to independence is growing around the world, and I would ask you to do all you can to put an end to this humanitarian crisis. It is time now that the Indonesian military withdraw and allow West Papuans their independence.
I look forward to receiving your reply.
