Kontras: SBY should offer constructive solutions for Papua’s problems

The Commission for Missing Persons and Victims of Violence (Kontras) urged President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono, on Sunday, to offer constructive solutions to end the violence in Papua.
"The President should take immediate strategic steps with the Coordinating Minister for Political, Legal and Security Affairs, the Defense Minister, the Indonesian Military (TNI) chief, and the National Police chief,” Kontras coordinator Haris Azhar said.
“They need to have the same vision in order to promote policies focusing on persuasive approaches to solving the problems in Papua."
Haris said that the government should not give any opinions or make comments which could worsen the situation in Papua.

Each party should also restrain themselves from offering recommendations to sending additional military forces to Papua, he said.
Last Thursday, the chairman of the Papua and Aceh special autonomy supervisory team, Priyo Budi Santoso, urged the government to send military forces to Papua if the referendum movement escalated into a mass insurgence.
Thousands of people staged demonstrations across Papua last week, demanding a referendum on Papuan independence.
A series of attacks against police and military posts in Papua also occurred, with the TNI accusing the Free Papua Movement (OPM) as the party responsible for the attacks.
Kontras recorded eight violent, armed incidents in July and Agustus this year in Papua.
22 civilians and one TNI personnel were killed in those incidents. (aaa)
