West Papua: Road to Freedom Konferenz in Oxford (Fotostrecke)

The Road to Freedom“, veranstaltet von den International Lawyers for West Papua und der Free West Papua Kampagne UK, hat weltweit für Schlagzeilen gesorgt. Nicht nur durch die Anwesenheit von hochkarätigen Parlamentariern, wie Andrew Smith, oder dem internationalen Menschenrechtsanwalt Charles Foster während der Konferenz, sondern auch weil zeitgleich 10 000 de Menschen in West Papua (Wamena, Jayapura) sowie in Papua Neuguinea (Port Moresby) für ein neues Referendum und für Unabhängigkeit von Indonesien demonstrierten. Die Massenproteste in den von Indonesien okkupierten West Papua waren gleichzeitig ein starkes Signal für die Unterstützung der Konferenz in Oxford.
Neben Benny Wenda (West Papuan independence leader), Frances Raday (Expert Member of the UN Committee for the Elimination of Discrimination Against Women), John Saltford (Expert on the 1969 Act of Free Choice), Clement Ronawery (Witness to the 1969 Act of Free Choice), Louis Yandeken (Papua New Guinea lawyer and long term supporter for West Papuan independence) sprachen auch Jennifer Robinson von den International Lawyer for West Papua. Weiter anwesend waren Delegierte internationaler Menschenrechtsorganisationen von Amnesty International, Survival International und fPcN interCultural.

‘West Papua is a forgotten conflict,’ sagte Charles Foster, Sprecher der International Lawyers for West Papua. ‘A blind eye has been most cynically turned by the international community towards the situation of the people there. In legal terms, the region has a clear right to self-determination,’ sagte Foster. ‘If you look at the New York Agreement [a treaty signed in 1962 by the Netherlands and Indonesia regarding the political status of West Papua, then known as West New Guinea] the United Nations was given trustee status over the region which was supposed to lead to self-determination in 1969. Indonesia has never disputed the fact it put its name to this agreement; therefore it implicitly acknowledges that it was bound by it.’

fPcN konnte durch Spenden dazu beitragen, das auch Victor Yeimo, Sprecher des West Papua National Committee (WPNK), an der Konferenz teilnehmen konnte. Victor: „Ich bedanke mich bei fPcN für die Unterstützung ohne die ich hier nicht hätte anwesend sein können.“ Das WPNK war der Hauptorganisator für die parallelen Proteste in Jayapura.





















Das Ergebnis der Konferenz war, dass mit dem „Act of Free Choice“ 1969 internationales Recht nach den Statuten der Vereinten Nationen von Seiten Indonesiens verletzt worden ist und damit das Recht der Papuas auf Selbstbestimmung.

Resolution of the conference:

-We have heard today of the grave and serious situation in West Papua.

-The root cause of this situation lies in the failed 1969 Act of Free Choice.

-We therefore re-affirm the declaration of the International Lawyers for West Papua. In particular that the West Papuans have a fundamental right to self-determination under international law and that this right has still not been exercised.

-We call on all nations to act at the highest levels and with the utmost urgency and to call on the United Nations to demand that the people of West Papua are allowed a true act of self-determination.
