I first met Benny Wenda, a human rights campaigner from West Papua, several years ago - and the period since, Benny has been granted asylum in the UK.
He was subjected to torture and brutality at the hands of the Indonesian authorities and, in common with other West Papuans, denied freedom of speech, the right to a fair trial and other basic rights.
As a member of International Parliamentarians for West Papua, I have followed his case closely and am appalled that Indonesia continues to try and smear the reputations of those brave enough to speak out about the oppression suffered by West Papuans.
Benny is now the subject of an Interpol red notice (at the request of Indonesia), which will restrict his movement outside of the UK and could result in him being arrested if he travels.
The red notice has been issued purely for political reasons, and I have been asking parliamentary questions about a process that allows this to happen.
