JAKARTA, Indonesia — An Indonesian journalist who covered a police sex scandal was treated in the hospital Thursday after being stabbed in the stomach and chest, police and activists said.
Banjir Ambarita, a reporter for the English-language daily The Jakarta Globe and the news portal Vivanews, was ambushed by two men on a motorcycle early Thursday in the easternmost Papua province, said Lt. Col. Wachjono, a police spokesman.
He promised the case would be investigated.
It was too early to tell if the attack was linked to several hard-hitting stories Ambarita has written about three police officers who confessed to sexually abusing a female detainee, Wachjono said, noting that the case also was covered by other media outlets.
The officers have been detained and local police chief Col. Imam Setiawan has offered to resign after taking "moral responsibility" for the abuse.
Eko Maryadi, a member of an independent journalists' association, said it was the sixth attack on a media worker this year.
He said that Ambarita was undergoing surgery Thursday for a punctured intestine.
