Papua New Guinea has welcomed indications from Indonesia that Jakarta may be willing to discuss the issue of West Papua with other Pacific nations.
The indications came at the conclusion of a Melanesian Spearhead Group summit in Fiji.
Indonesia attended the summit in Suva as an observer, creating tension with West Papua's independence movement.
The independence movement has unsuccessfully sought observer status at the MSG for years.
But Papua New Guinea's Foreign Minister Don Polye told Radio Australia's Connect Asia Indonesia's presence is a sign that a dialogue can take place.

Fiji focus
This was despite West Papuan independence not being officially raised at the summit. The meeting focused heavily on Fiji.
It also discussed many other issues affecting Melanesian nations, including increasing labour mobility among member nations.
It also agreed to support efforts in Tahiti to secure independence from France.
New Caledonia's pro independence party, the FLNKS, will host the next summit in two years time.
