What the Indonesian military is doing is criminal and barbaric, writes Charlie Hill-Smith.
THE highest mountains between the Himalayas and the Andes are the snow-topped crags of West Papua (4884 metres). A tropical glacier pokes out of the sweltering green of Asia's largest rain forests. This is the second largest island on earth, with 15 per cent of all the world's languages, an encyclopaedic biodiversity and a new El Dorado for our resource-hungry world.
Most of us know little about the shady goings-on inside the giant forested island just to our north. But a constant trickle of murders, disappearances, arrests, torture and a wave of mass civil actions have raised the international volume of this previously silent war.

Indonesia Milerism in West Papua
The victim does not include non-Papuan people who also become victims of the conflict which has lasted for 33 years ..
Conflict in Papua, which occurred since 1977 has claimed the lives of up to 100 thousand people. The number of victims was referring to the data released by Amnesty International recently. According to researchers Parahyangan Centre for International Studies (Pacis), I Nyoman Sudira, the conflict in Papua, is much more complex than has ever happened in Aceh.

"Of course the official estimates of government is much smaller. Conflict with so many victims are very painful and expensive. Victor Yeimo, Jubir KNPB (Foto: Ist)
PAPUAN, Jayapura --- West Papua National Committee (KNPB) saw Tri People's Command (Trikora) December 19, 1961 with a very clear violation of the implementation of the UN Charter Article 73, which Indonesia as part of decolonization commission should respect the declaration of independence of West Papua December 1, 1961.
"KNPB demanding solidarity countries, including members of the UN Decolonization Committee in order to register the territory of West Papua into the UN decolonization list for West Papua is also a colony that has not its own sovereign."
This was conveyed by Victor Yeimo, KNPB International spokesman, when contacted Papua Voices, this afternoon, Monday (19/12) of Germany.
According Yeimo, Indonesia has been forced through Trikora and annexed the territory of West Papua into the Republic of Indonesia with a militaristic manner.

Werewolf Edition 20 Now Available! – The Politics of Welfare Reform

Werewolf Edition 20 Now Available! – The Politics of Welfare Reform From Werewolf Editor Gordon Campbell
From Werewolf Editor Gordon Campbell

Hi and welcome to the first full issue of Werewolf for 2011. Every few years, governments like to create a moral panic about how welfare is corroding the moral fibre of the poor and – as this month’s cover story indicates – the real targets of this process are resentful low and middle income workers. Sure, a minority of beneficiaries do abuse the system – just as a minority cheat on their taxes or don’t pay their parking fines. Yet the vast majority of beneficiaries make ends meet with honesty as best they can, on very little. The bulk of them would much prefer to be working in jobs – but the government seems unable to manage the economy in a way that will provide them.
Last month, long time Werewolf contributor James Robinson took himself and his camera to Washington DC. James ran into CNN’s Wolf Blitzer going the other way, and took in the rest of the sights (big and small) of what Spike Lee and George Clinton used to call Chocolate City. With The Hobbit fiasco behind us, Werewolf turns to consider Treasury’s ingrained opposition to the subsidies that makes such productions possible, and examines how many US states are now re-evaluating the worth of schemes. Opinion remains divided. Tax credits and film production grants are either a terrible waste of money or absolutely essential to saving film industry jobs. Talking about polarisation, people seem to be widely and weirdly divided in their cultural responses as well. Things are either omigod/totally awesome/you must see it ! or ‘meh ” – a word of such steely indifference that Werewolf has written a totally awesome article about it, which was probably the most ‘meh’ idea of all time. Too late now.
