TV Papua, vreedzame demonstratie in Fakfak en openbare recht zitting in West-Papua

TV Papua, Vandaag in ons journaal en terugblik op 2 gebeurtenissen uit West Papua.

In Fak Fak was er een vreedzame demonstratie gehouden door de Papua's.
Ze riepen de Indonesische authoriteiten op, om alle politieke gevangen in West Papua vrij te laten.
Ook Het onrecht, ongelijkheid en discriminatie dat nu ruim 50 jaar structureel aanwezig is in West Papua moet stoppen.
De demonstranten droegen grote borden met foto's van onder andere Hilary Clinton, Parlementariers en andere politieke figuren.

 

West Papua wordt ruim 50 jaar gekoloniseerd door Indonesie en de realiteit in West Papua is verre van een Democratie.
De Papua's willen een VN interventie, aangezien het blijkt dat Jakarta totaal geen wil heeft om de Papua's perspectief te bieden. en
Op 26 juli jongsleden was er een openbare rechtszitting in West Papua, met Filip Karma en Buchtar Tabuni.
Tijdens de zitting werden ze door de Rechter uitgehoord en ondervraagt.

Statement from the International Parliamentarians for West Papua on the Escalating Violence in West Papua

As members of the International Parliamentarians for West Papua, we voice our concerns over the escalating violence in West Papua, especially in Wamena and Jayapura.

We are saddened by the recent murder of West Papuan independence leader Mako Tabuni and we express our sincerest condolences to his family and friends. We call on you to conduct a thorough investigation into Mako Tabuni’s death.

We are also concerned by the recent re-imprisonment of Buchtar Tabuni and his colleagues, Jufri Wandikbo and Assa Alua, and the continued imprisonment of Filep Karma, an Amnesty International recognized prisoner of conscience, who was sentenced to 15 years in prison for raising the Morning Star flag at a peaceful protest.  We ask you to release and to drop all charges against these detainees and others who have been held for peacefully expressing views. We also request your help in assuring that Mr. Tabuni and his colleague be released immediately from custody, as we have further concerns that he may be at risk of torture and other ill-treatment.

We call on you to allow foreign journalists and humanitarian organizations entry into West Papua in order to provide a comprehensive report of the human rights situation there.

As the International Parliamentarians for West Papua, we support the indigenous people’s of West Papua’s call to a genuine act of self-determination, a right which was not recognized in the 1969 Act of Free Choice. We are therefore deeply troubled by your government’s suppression of political activity in West Papua. We urge you and your government to end the violence in West Papua, by listening to West Papuans call to self-determination, rather than attempting to silence them.

People in over 80 countries in every region of the world have come together to demand the release of Indonesian prisoner of conscience Filep Karma, who is currently serving a 15-year prison sentence for taking part in a peaceful ceremony where a Papuan regional flag was raised.

US Lawmakers Urge Indonesia to Free Papuan Activist

Washington. More than two dozen US lawmakers on Monday urged Indonesia to free Papuan activist Filep Karma, saying that his detention raised questions about the emerging US ally’s commitment to democracy.
Karma was sentenced to 15 years in prison after a 2004 demonstration in which he raised a banned flag associated with separatism in Papua, an ethnically distinct and impoverished province of the vast archipelago.
Twenty-six members of the US House of Representatives across party lines sent a letter to Indonesian President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono urging Karma’s release and saying he has suffered “degrading and inhumane treatment” in prison.

Christian Solidarity Worldwide (CSW) today called on the Government of Indonesia to release the West Papuan political prisoner Filep Karma, and respond to the proposal made by Papuan people for a dialogue process, with international mediation, to resolve the serious human rights, humanitarian, political, social and economic problems in West Papua.

A CSW delegation returned from a three-week visit to Indonesia last week, which included three days in West Papua. CSW requested permission to visit Filep Karma in Abepura prison, but access was refused.

Latar Belakang

Provinsi Papua dan Papua Barat (di sini secara bersama disebut “Papua”) menempati setengah bagian barat dari Pulau New Guinea. Tidak seperti bagian lain dari Indonesia yang mendapat kemerdekaan pada 1945, Papua masih di bawah administrasi Kerajaan Belanda hingga 1960-an.
Pada 1 Desember 1961, Papua Raad, sebuah lembaga yang disponsori pemerintah kolonial Belanda, menyatakan masyarakat Papua siap mendirikan sebuah negara berdaulat, dan mengibarkan bendera nasional baru yang dinamakan Bintang Kejora.
Presiden Sukarno berpendapat Papua harus menjadi bagian dari Indonesia dan menuduh Kerajaan Belanda berusaha menciptakan “negara boneka” di depan pintu Indonesia. Pada 1962, Sukarno memerintah pasukan Indonesia untuk menyerbu Papua. Pemerintah Amerika Serikat turun tangan dalam proses diplomasi. Setelah negosiasi, Indonesia dan Belanda pun setuju menunjuk PBB mengadakan sebuah referendum bagi Papua. Penentuan Pendapat Rakyat, yang disponsori PBB ini berlangsung pada 1969. Ia hanya diwakili 1,054 warga Papua yang sebelumnya ditentukan pemerintah Indonesia. Mereka bulat-bulat memilih integrasi dengan Indonesia. Banyak penduduk Papua memandang “Penentuan Pendapat Rakyat” ini merupakan manipulasi bagi Indonesia menduduki Papua.[28]

Audryne Karma on human rights in West Papua

Audryne Karma has an op-ed in the Wall Street Journal today on human rights in West Papua and her father Filep Karma's case.

She writes "for many West Papuans like me, the old regime dies hard. Indonesia has yet to realize the promise of democracy and human rights for all of its citizens... Papuans who peacefully express dissent are punished with more than a decade of imprisonment."

Audryne is Filep Karma's eldest daughter. Filep was sent sentenced in 2005 to 15 years in prison "for speaking about our survival as a nation and raising the West Papuan Morning Star flag at a ceremony organized to commemorate West Papua's liberation from Dutch rule back in 1961." She then goes on to describe Filep's trial and continued persecution in prison.

I FIRST met Filep Karma in the Papuan capital, Jayapura, in November 2000. Even in the relatively open political climate that prevailed in Papua during the first years after the fall of Suharto, he was a courageous and striking figure.
